How it all started:
from ‘I must do’ to ‘I want to do’…
Life flies by at lightning speed, a life in which we constantly ‘have to’ do something. And that ‘I have to’ starts already at a very young age. In my time, as a four-year-old, you went to kindergarten, where learning began. In a playful way, you learned how to learn and interact with your classmates. And of course, how to listen to what the teacher was saying. Hence, the great ‘obeying’ started at an early age.
Yes, a motorhome! But which one?
I have made the final decision; I am going to rent a motorhome to experience if this is as fun as I think it is. With this great intention, a lot of questions immediately come to my mind: when am I going to do this, for how long, where do I rent that camper, is it somewhat affordable, what about the insurances, do I still have to buy ‘camping stuff’ for this? These are all questions that are fairly easy to address. However, the most important question is: what kind of motorhome do I want to rent?
My first camper(van) experience
Today – for the first time in my life – I’m going to experience how it feels to travel with a campervan. The night before I prepared everything for my trip and then I fell asleep like a log, to wake up completely rested. The weather forecast is not rosy. It’s going to be four days with a lot of fog, clouds and rain. Fortunately, if the forecast is correct, with reasonably high temperatures, despite the fact that we are already in the second half of October. All in all, ideal weather to try out a compact motorhome. Because if I like it under these not too rosy conditions, it’s only going to be better with good weather. I’m grateful to the weather gods, thanks!

Shall I buy a campervan, rent one, or wait?
The long weekend that I’ve spent with the VW California T6.1 was beyond doubt very enjoyable. To the level that I’m more than convinced: I would love to have my own campervan and preferably this T6.1. A done deal one would say, or not…? The ‘or not’ has nothing to do with the fact whether the T6.1 is a nice campervan or whether I’ve enjoyed the ‘try out’. There are just a couple of ‘small issues’ to resolve…
Configuring & Ordering my own Cali
I have to be honest, the decision to buy a Cali was not easy for me and for sure not taken overnight. I can however hardly describe the joy that I feel now. I’ve made the absolute right decision and can’t wait to have the Cali parked in front of my door. But first I must go through the process of configuring and ordering it (and I’m quite sure, before receiving the keys, they also require me to pay for it).

WAITING & PREPARING FOR MY CALI – part 1…
It’s been seven weeks since I ordered my own campervan. My Volkswagen California Ocean T7 hybrid, quite a mouthful for this beautiful and compact future travel companion. I was also told that it will take a while before I receive it. The production agenda indicated that the start of production of ‘my Cali’ would probably be in the first week of May 2025. With an expected delivery date of early June. Although I must wait almost half a year, I will have my Cali just in time for the summer holidays!
THE LONG WAITING COMES TO AN END – final part…
Sometimes time passes very quickly, like an arrow being shot out of a bow at an enormous speed. And sometimes time creeps forward even slower than a snail. At least, that’s how it feels. Because if there is a ‘unit’ that is not subject to change or inflation, it is the concept of ‘time’. A second always lasts a second, everywhere on our planet and under all circumstances (at least, that’s what we as humans have learned in school). Yet the perception we have of ‘time’ is subject to personal circumstances. Statements such as ‘this takes forever’ and ‘it flew by’ are therefore commonplace. As such everything, even time, is relative.
I’M NOW A PROUD VW CALI OWNER!
A long time ago I promised myself that – when I would retire – I would buy a motorhome. Nothing seemed more beautiful to me than being able to enjoy my free time whilst traveling through Europe. From the moment I decided to buy a motorhome after my retirement, I was a regular visitor to motorhome fairs. The large Camper fair in Düsseldorf was at the top of my list. Nowhere else in Europe can you compare so many different types of motorhomes and accessories as in this beautiful German city. Only few times did I skip the fair. But when I was there, I was amazed by all that beauty. And after every visit I was looking forward to the moment that I could call myself a proud owner of a motorhome.

What an interesting – or maybe even weird – logo one might say, what does it represent…
